Women and Digital Health: How Technology Is Improving Maternal and Reproductive Healthcare

Every woman deserves access to safe, high-quality maternal and reproductive healthcare, regardless of where she lives. Yet millions of women worldwide continue to face barriers such as long distances to healthcare facilities, shortages of medical professionals, limited infrastructure, and financial constraints. These challenges are particularly serious in low- and middle-income countries, where preventable pregnancy and childbirth complications continue to claim lives.

Technology is helping change this reality. From telemedicine and mobile health applications to artificial intelligence, wearable devices, and digital education, digital health is making healthcare more accessible while helping women become more informed and involved in decisions about their health.

Bringing Healthcare Closer to Women

Maternal mortality remains a major global health challenge. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 260,000 women died from pregnancy and childbirth-related complications in 2023. Around 92% of these deaths occurred in low- and lower-middle-income countries. Most maternal deaths are preventable when women have timely access to quality healthcare and skilled professionals.

Telemedicine Makes Care More Accessible

Imagine an expectant mother living several hours from the nearest hospital. Instead of travelling for every routine consultation, she may now be able to speak with a healthcare professional through a video call, telephone consultation, or secure messaging platform.

Telemedicine can support routine prenatal consultations, postpartum follow-up, mental health services, and faster referrals when a pregnancy is considered high-risk. By reducing unnecessary travel and waiting times, it can make maternal healthcare more convenient and affordable, particularly for women in rural and underserved communities.

Telemedicine does not replace in-person medical care when physical examinations or emergency treatment are required. Instead, it provides an additional connection between women and healthcare professionals.

Mobile Apps Put Health Information in Women's Hands

The widespread use of smartphones has created another opportunity to improve women's healthcare. Mobile health applications can help women track pregnancy milestones, monitor fetal development, receive appointment reminders, manage medications, and learn about nutrition and healthy pregnancy practices.

Beyond pregnancy, apps can support menstrual tracking, fertility awareness, family planning, and access to reproductive health information. Some also educate users about warning signs that require medical attention, encouraging women to seek professional care earlier.

Artificial Intelligence Supports Earlier Detection

Artificial intelligence (AI) is also emerging as a valuable decision-support tool in maternal healthcare. Rather than replacing healthcare professionals, AI can analyze medical information and identify patterns that may indicate potential risks, including preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, pregnancy-induced hypertension, fetal growth restriction, and the risk of preterm birth. Earlier identification can give clinicians more time to intervene and provide appropriate care.

Wearable Technology Enables Continuous Monitoring

Wearable devices are changing how health can be monitored outside hospitals and clinics, tracking indicators such as heart rate, blood pressure, blood glucose, sleep, physical activity, and weight changes. For women with high-risk pregnancies, remote monitoring can provide healthcare professionals with additional information between appointments and potentially help identify concerning changes earlier.

Challenges Must Still Be Addressed

Despite its potential, digital health is not a complete solution. Many rural communities still lack reliable internet access, while the cost of smartphones, data services, and wearable devices can prevent some women from benefiting from digital healthcare. The gender digital divide also remains a concern: in some communities, women have less access to digital devices and connectivity than men, limiting their ability to benefit from healthcare innovations.

Digital technology cannot solve every healthcare challenge on its own, but it can become an important part of a stronger and more equitable healthcare system.

Governments, healthcare providers, technology companies, and development organizations can work together to expand digital infrastructure, improve affordable internet access, increase digital literacy, strengthen patient privacy, and ensure innovations reach underserved communities.
